After taking the first NCAA Division III tournament victory in program history on Friday, March 2, the Emory & Henry women’s basketball team saw its season end the next night in the tourney’s second round.

Host Messiah of Pennsylvania, the 12th-ranked squad in the country, overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half to beat the Wasps 62-49. E&H ended the year with a 23-7 record while Messiah moved on with a 27-2 mark.

The 23 season victories are a program best for the E&H women.

A couple of sophomores led the Wasps’ scoring attack against Messiah. Kara Stafford put in 14 points, and Sydney McKinney added 11. Maci Thornton scored a game-high 20 points for the Falcons.

In Friday’s first-round game, also in Grantham, Pennsylvania, the Wasps beat Roger Williams of Rhode Island 66-55. They extended a four-point advantage going into the fourth quarter to as much as a 17-point lead.

Junior Taylor Blevins put in 17 points to lead E&H on Friday. Stafford scored 11 points and McKinney 10, and Chloe Harris contributed six assists.

Playing in Newport News in the first round of their NCAA tourney Friday, the E&H men fell to Franklin & Marshall of Pennsylvania 73-59. It was the first appearance in the national tourney for the Wasp men since 1993.

E&H led Franklin & Marshall during the second half before the Diplomats went on an 18-2 run that put them ahead 69-54 with 1:26 left.

Junior Jarris Hendricks, who was 4-for-4 from three-point range, scored a team-high 14 points for the Wasps. Senior Chase Branscomb totaled 11 rebounds and nine points, junior Alic Wynn provided 10 points and nine boards, and sophomore Colin Molden tallied 11 points and six assists.

The Wasp men finished with a 22-7 record.
