After capturing the first boys’ Virginia High School League team title in school sports history last spring, it didn’t take Patrick Henry’s track program long to pick up a second one. Competing in the combined indoor state meet for Class 2 and Class 1 schools Feb. 21 and 22 at Roanoke College, the Rebels collected their second state team title in track in eight months.

Led by two individual championships from senior Connor Buchanan and two relay state titles, the Rebels rolled up 80 points to finish eight in front of second-place Auburn and 18 ahead of third-place Maggie Walker.

Buchanan’s individual wins were in the triple jump (44-10) and 55-meter dash (6.64 seconds). He was also third in the long jump (20-3) and ran on both champion relay squads.

He, fellow seniors Jackson Cruise and Austin Faris, and junior Brady Stiltner were first in the 4x200 relay in 1:34.73. Buchanan, Faris, Stiltner and senior Gavin Grossman took first in the 4x400 in 3:37.38 (six-hundredths of a second in front of Poquoson and seven-hundredths of a second ahead of James River).

Grossman also ran to two individual runner-up finishes. He ran the 1,000 meters in 2:40.27 and the 1,600 meters in 4:32.75 in placing second to Poquoson senior Clint Gault in each.

Cruise was second to Buchanan in the 55 meters (6.67) and seventh in the long jump (19-0½). Faris ran the 55-meter hurdles in 7.96 seconds, which was second to the 7.95 of Riverheads senior Josh Akinwumi.
