Bland County’s resurrected golf program is set to begin its second season with a slate of six matches scheduled thus far as the Bland County Messenger goes to press this week. Head coach Ed Woods has a roster of 11 golfers to fill onto his scorecards as the season is set to begin on Aug. 27 with a match versus Fort Chiswell and others at Draper.
Woods boasts of having four players qualify for regional competition last year, a list that includes Bland County Messenger 2017 golfer of the year Emily Ratliff, a senior, as well as senior teammate Sydnee Moses and sophomores Luke Parker and Andrew Hill.
“We have some golfers that have some experience,” Woods said. “Then we have some that have never played.”
Woods must replace the departed Dylan Havens on his roster from last year but is benefitted from adding newcomers Nolan Hunt and Oak Bradshaw, both seniors, sophomores Kaegan Young, Alex Stroupe, J. T. Russo, and Emmett Cagle and freshman Ben Ratliff.
Woods expects Auburn and George Wythe to set the standard among MED competition and, knowing your must crawl before you can walk, hopes his squad will progressively get better as the season goes on.
“Our goals include improving individual players’ scores,” Woods said. “That will obviously improve our team scores.”
