Whitney Saunders

Tazewell High School’s new athletic director Whitney Saunders.

Tazewell High’s new athletic director made it a trifecta for alumni returning to the school next year. Whitney Saunders was named athletic director the same day Tazewell High School graduate Omar Reed took the leadership role for the boys’ basketball team.

Three days later Jerry Smith, another alumnus became the school’s principal. Saunders was at the school this past year as an aide and helped coach the girls’ basketball and softball teams.

She will be part of the faculty this coming year as well as taking on the athletic directors’ job.

She is a graduate of Tazewell High School and was a multi-sport athlete and moved on to Virginia Tech where she played softball.

Saunders is excited about the new role and looking forward to the challenge. She officially becomes the athletic director July 1 and will join the faculty Aug. 12 when teachers return to work in Tazewell County.

She replaces Patrick Buckner, who resigned to pursue a master’s degree in administration.
