David Russell Blevins, age 69, of Rural Retreat, Va., passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2019. He was born in Wythe Co., Va., on February 25, 1949, the son of the late Evelyn Bailey Blevins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was preceded in death by a daughter, Jann Simmons; grandson, Matt Bullion; and sisters, Etta Rhea Altizer and Jane Bentley. David, "Sunshine" was a good man who stood tall in his love and his wisdom. He loved his family, not just from blood, but the one he chose from love. He loved his children and grandchildren deeply and taught them about God, nature, and how to live. The lessons he taught will be shared for generations because of this love. He was a devoted husband to his "beautiful bride" of 24 years. He was a gentle man of few words and a blessing to all through his kindness and generosity. He is survived by his wife, Carole M. Blevins; sons, John David Blevins, Jimmy Simmons, and David Simmons, all of Rural Retreat; daughters, Jill Price of Wytheville, Joy Simmons of Rural Retreat, and Christy Stanley of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Tyler, Hannah, Amber, Johnny, Cole, Dylan, Ethan, Sarah, Noah, Addie, and Daylin; great-grandchildren, Katie, Macey, Emmy, and Annie; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at the Lindsey Memorial Chapel with Father Bernie Ramirez and the Rev. Jack Rutherford officiating. Military Rites followed by American Legion Post # 229 of Rural Retreat. A graveside committal service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at the Mountain View Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the service or they may call at the home of his daughter, Joy Simmons, 254 Hawthorne Hollow Rd, Rural Retreat, at any time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of one's choice or to your local humane society. Lindsey Funeral Home, Rural Retreat, Va. is serving the Blevins family.
