EMORY, Va. Viola Lorena Litz "Granny" Addison died following a brief illness Wednesday, July 8, 2015, surrounded by loving family. She was born August 31, 1922, to the late George Buford and Eva Steffey Litz in Rural Retreat, Va. She grew to adulthood and began working at a shirt factory there. During World War II she went to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the war department. After the war she married returning veteran Ben Thomas Addison and began her 46 year career operating Addison's store in Emory, Va. For many years she was also a gardener and homemaker. She retired October 31, 1992. She was well loved and respected by her family, friends and many former customers in Emory and surrounding communities. She was one of the first recipients of the Emory & Henry College Community Day Awards. Though usually a quiet person, she had a wonderful sense of humor. She was an avid reader, having read thousands of novels. In recent years she enjoyed many Sunday drives with her daughter and son exploring the back roads and sights in the five-state area. She even came to enjoy the company of two "spoiled rotten" cats. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, and sisters, Elizabeth Lyons, Eloise Litz, and Alene Wagoner. She is survived by her daughter, Linda A. Catron, and husband, Fred M. Catron; son, Ben T. Addison, Jr and wife, Ginger Bingham Griffith Addison; grandson, F. M. "Micky" Catron, III; granddaughter, Cristal Jeneane Catron; step-granddaughter, Stevie Griffith Threlkeld; sister, Doris "Dot" Crigger;" special niece, Janet L. Edwards; special nephew, Thomas E. Merrihue; several more nieces and nephews; special friends, Ellen Myatt and Amy Merrihue; "honorary great grandchildren" Kelly Morton, Kaitie Morton and Kendal Morton; and "honorary great-great grandchildren" Brantley Widener, Kaybrie Morton and Rylann Little. The family received friends at the Frost Funeral Home on Friday evening, July 10, 2015, from 6 until 8 p.m. in the Chapel of the Frost Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, July 11, 2015, with Mr. Henry Dawson officiating and Mr. Bill McCall providing the music at the Holston Conference Cemetery in Emory, Virginia. Pall Bearers will be nephews, Buddy Lyons, Bernie Lyons, David Lyons and Tommy Crigger; also Kelly Morton, and Bill Mink. Honorary pall bearers include Laurn Becker, Dave Hill, D. Michael Weaver and Steve White. The family would like to thank caregiver Velvet Eldreth, along with the staffs at Smyth County Community Hospital Emergency Room, Bristol Regional Medical Center 2-West and Wellmont Hospice. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Meadowview Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 84, Meadowview, VA 24361 or the Glade Spring Volunteer Life Saving Crew, P.O.
