According to the Virginia State Police, a 27-year-old Atkins woman was flown to a nearby hospital Tuesday afternoon for serious injuries received in a traffic-related incident near Atkins Elementary School.
Virginia State Police Senior Trooper J. Ferland is investigating the 3:25 p.m. incident at the intersection of U.S. 11 and Candice Lane, said VSP public relations director Corinne Geller. A 2007 Dodge Caliber was traveling south on U.S. 11 when the woman ran into the travel lane. The Dodge swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the woman, but was unable to avoid striking her. The Dodge then ran off the right side of the road. The woman got up and ran into a nearby residence, Geller said.
Marion Fire/EMS and Atkins Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
The driver of the Dodge, a 34-year-old man from Rural Retreat, was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt. No charges were placed.
