A trip to the store for groceries turned into a bonanza for a Chilhowie man.
Donald Terry bought a Bankroll ticket from the Virginia Lottery when he shopped at Main Street Gas and Grill on West Main Street in Chilhowie. When he later scratched the ticket at home, he discovered he’d won the game’s $150,000 top prize.
“I couldn’t believe it!” he said as he claimed his prize. “I looked at the ticket and said, ‘It can’t be true!’”
Terry, who works as a roofer, said he hopes to use his winnings for some home repairs.
Bankroll (game #1956) is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $5 to $150,000. The odds of winning the top prize in this game are 1 in 1,040,400. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 4.3.
Terry’s the first person to claim the top prize this game, which means three $150,000 tickets remain unclaimed.
When it comes to education, the Virginia Lottery helps. Terry bought the ticket in Smyth County, which received more than $3.4 million in lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. Now in its 30th year, the Virginia Lottery generates more than $1.6 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of Lottery products, the Lottery generated more than $600 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2018. In addition, more than $14 million in unclaimed Virginia Lottery prizes went to Virginia’s Literary Fund in FY18 for school construction and technology upgrades.
