truck fire

A tractor-trailer fire slowed traffic in Smyth County for about two hours Friday morning.

The fire occurred at 9:53 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 at the 41 mile marker.

According to the Virginia State Police, a tractor-trailer, hauling frozen food, caught fire. The driver was able to safely exit the vehicle without injury. The cab was completely destroyed in the fire.

Marion Fire and EMS responded to the fire.

According to the agency’s Facebook post, “Medic 1-2, Engine 1, Tanker 1 and Tanker 2 responded and on arrival, initial attack was made on the tractor portion. Once the majority of the flames were knocked down, the trailer was checked for extension. One lane was reopened to allow traffic to flow while overhaul was being conducted.”

The Smyth County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene.

The travel lanes were re-opened by noon.
