ABINGDON, Va. — A traffic stop on Thursday led authorities to arrest two people in the Widener’s Valley section of Washington County.

Benjamin Alexander Kirkpatrick, 27, and Tyler Jordan Smythe, 20, both of Abingdon, were arrested. Kirkpatrick was charged with possession of a firearm with drugs, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor carry with a concealed weapon and two traffic citations.

Smythe was charged with three outstanding warrants, breaking and entering, misdemeanor property damage and assault and battery.

Sheriff Fred Newman said 911 dispatch received a call about someone destroying property. Before deputies arrived, the person left in a vehicle, which was eventually stopped by officers, the sheriff said. During the stop, officers said they found the driver in possession of a concealed pistol and meth.

Both men are being held without bail at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon.
