BRISTOL, Va. — Several people were displaced Friday when a fire was reported in a city housing unit.

Firefighters were called Friday morning to an apartment building on Harmeling Street, where smoke detectors and the alarm system had activated and alerted occupants, according to Battalion Chief Michael Wise.

The fire ignited in a bedroom, but the sprinkler system held the fire in check, and firefighters made entry in an offensive mode to extinguish the fire, Wise said. The fire was contained to the bedroom, he added.

Residents in two units were displaced due to smoke and water damage upstairs and water damage in the lower unit. Four adults and five children have been displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross and the housing authority.

Wise said the apartments will not be livable until they are repaired. No injuries were reported.
