JASPER, Va. — The man and woman who were found dead with gunshot wounds inside a wrecked vehicle in Lee County early Sunday have been identified and one was an officer with the Big Stone Gap Police Department, according to the Virginia State Police.

The bodies were identified as Bailey S. Smith, 21, of Duffield, who was the police officer, and Emeri A. Connery, 26, of Coolville, Ohio.

Big Stone Gap Town Manager Stephen Lawson confirmed in a Facebook post that Smith had been an officer since January 2018 and said he “loved serving his community and being involved in law enforcement.” He said Smith and Connery were cousins.

Both Smith and Connery were dead when Trooper D.G. Giles arrived at the scene, the VSP said.

On Tuesday, Virginia State Police said the deaths were being treated as a murder-suicide. The investigation is ongoing.
