Two Bluefield, Virginia, women are facing child cruelty charges after a toddler in their care was found with more than two dozen bite marks all over his body.

According to a complaint filed at the Tazewell County Courthouse last August, police found the one-year-old boy with 25 bite marks “from head to toe,” some of them overlapping one another. Some were healing and some were new, the report said, and one bite mark appeared to be an open wound.

The complaint noted that the department of social services had previously investigated the case a month before when the same toddler had received a bite to the face. Case workers determined then that a preschool-aged family member had been responsible, the complaint said.

Isabella Mattie Nunn, 25, and her mother, 58-year-old Connie Lee Nunn, were directed by a case worker to notify DSS if the biting resumed.

The Bluefield Police Department became involved after the agency received a report that the child had more bite marks. The department went to the house to perform a welfare check on the family.

During the visit, officer Paul M. Rogers also found another child— an eight-month-old—lying in a bassinet on the kitchen table. The infant had a bite mark on his arm, Rogers wrote in the complaint, and had a wet, bloody scab on the back of his head. The officer noted that he also observed dried blood on the headrest of where the infant had been sleeping.

“Within the last two weeks, they allowed this to continue without getting help and never contacted DSS,” Rogers wrote of Isabella and Connie Nunn. “They also never sought medical attention [for the children].”

The two boys were treated by rescue workers on scene and were transported to a hospital. The department of social services took custody of the boys after they were released from the hospital.

Isabella Nunn and Connie Nunn were each charged with two counts cruelty or injury to a child and one count contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A Tazewell County grand jury handed down indictments for the two women July 9.
