Accused in a Christmas Day assault that police said left his wife bloodied and bruised, an Austinville man will now stand trial following Monday’s grand jury session in Wytheville.

Alan Don Brechbiel, 59, was indicted on charges of malicious wounding and abduction in an attack on Barbara Brechbiel, according to court records.

In a criminal complaint, Deputy C.A. Harrington said he went to the couple’s residence on Dec. 31, 2018, after getting a call that Barbara Brechbiel had possibly been assaulted.

He said he talked to Alan Brechbiel who was inside the residence with the door shut and locked.

“I told Mr. Brechbiel that we were there to do a welfare check on Barbara and he stated that she was fine,” Harrington wrote. “…Mr. Brechbiel still would not let us in and told us to go away and come back with a warrant.”

Harrington said that Barbara then came to the door with a bruised face and swollen eyes and told her husband to open the door.

“I began kicking the door to get it open to get to Barbara and provide her aid,” Harrington wrote. “Mr. Brechbeil still would not open the door and Mr. Brechbiel told Barbara to go get her gun.”

After eventually getting inside the residence, Harrington arrested Alan Brechbiel and interviewed Barbara Brechbeil.

She told the officer that Alan had “hit her in the face and neck and chest and her injuries were a result of the assault.”

“Barbara also had open wounds on her wrists and bruises on her wrists and forearms,” the deputy wrote.

Alan Brechbeil, who doesn’t have any criminal convictions, is being held without bond in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin while awaiting trial. According to court records, Brechbeil would only speak in German when questioned by a magistrate.

“…When asked if he would be put under oath for participation in his bail hearing, he answered ‘nein,’” a magistrate wrote.

Brechbeil is scheduled to enter pleas on May 8.
