July 4 at Crab Orchard

Ice cream eating is one of the many contests on July 4 at Crab Orchard Museum.

The night sky in Tazewell County will light up in celebration of July Fourth several times this weekend.

The town of Tazewell will host Independence Day celebrations, in two different locations with activities at Crab Orchard Museum from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on the front lawn of the Tazewell High School from 6 to 10 p.m. Fireworks are set to begin at dark.

The Tazewell events kick off at the museum with a flag raising by the Tazewell VFW Post 7136 at 10:30 a.m. Costumed interpreters will demonstrate pioneer skills throughout the day, including woodcarving, chair caning, quilting, colonial cooking, butter making, long rifle firing, blacksmithing, cross cut sawing, weaving, lucet and finger weaving, cannon firing and more in the Pioneer Park. Visitors can also listen to live old-time music with Phil Bevins & Friends and bluegrass music from Bluestone.

There will be bounce houses, games for children and music by Victor Lawson and Boogie Chillen at Tazewell High School starting at 6 p.m.

Pocahontas also has fireworks scheduled for Thursday, with music and food vendors from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fireworks will start at 9 p.m. Bluefield and Jewell Ridge will have fireworks celebrations Friday. The show in Bluefield will be at Bowen Field following the Blue Jays game.
