The April Floyd County Chamber of Commerce membership lunch meeting will be held on Monday, April 22 at noon in the Skyline National Bank’s Community Room. The lunch sponsor is Aim High Driving School, and lunch will be provided for those who RSVP by Friday, April 19, 2019 to info@floydchamber.org or 540-745-4407; otherwise all from the business community are welcome to come.

The meeting’s presentation will be provided by Marty Holiday, Executive Director of the New River/Mount Rogers Workforce Development Board (WDB), and Jenny Bolte, Project Manager for WDB, who will talk about how their organization supports businesses and career/job seekers in this region. The WBD is made up of representatives from regional businesses (minimum of 51%), education, organized labor, community based organizations, economic development and federally required One-Stop Partners. All WDB members are appointed by the Consortium Board. The WDB oversees the programs and initiatives as specified in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (which include programs for adults, youth, and dislocated workers) and other special grants and programs as available. The WDB also acts as a coordinator/convener for the region’s workforce system to interface with economic development and the business community. The Workforce System includes (but is not limited to): K-12 Education systems, Post-Secondary Education/Training providers, Adult Education, Training/Employment Programs offered for special populations (older workers, workers with disabilities, economically disadvantaged individuals, youth - ages 14-21, and veterans.

Lunch meeting sponsor, Aim High Driving School, was founded in 2014 by Reed and Holly Carpenter in Rocky Mount, Virginia and expanded to Floyd in 2016. The business has grown to include two employees, including a Spanish-translator, and now offers a wide-range of classroom and behind-the-wheel educational courses. Aim High Driving School’s mission is to prepare every student with the knowledge and skill sets needed to further their driving careers and be safe and conscientious drivers on our public roads. Aim High currently offers: basic Driver Education and Behind the Wheel courses for minors, Driver Improvement classes, Virginia Driver Manual Course, private driving lessons, Licensure Preparation, and private classroom tutoring. In 2017, the school added Escort Driver Training classes. All of these courses are offered at the Floyd location which is in the lower level of the Winter Sun Building, 302 S.
