Floyd County High School’s Lady Buffaloes varsity softball team qualified for the Virginia High School League’s state tournament Thursday with a 2-1 win over the Appomattox Lady Raiders in the Region 2C semi-final match at Botetourt Sports Complex near Daleville.

The two teams went into the seventh and final inning tied 1-1 after both teams left runners on the bases in earlier innings, including one when Lady Buffs’ pitcher Olivia Yates struck out a batter with runners on second and third with two outs and a count of three balls and two strikes.

Yates also had tied the game earlier with a solo home run.

With two out in the top of the seventh, the Lady Buffs had two runners on base when a loop single sent one home before an attempt by the second runner was ruled out at home.

That left Appomattox with one more chance to tie the game and perhaps win in the bottom of the seventh and a tying run was on base when Yates struck out another batter for the final out and win.
