The Floyd County Chamber of Commerce and chamber member, New River Community Services (NRVCS), are collaborating on an April Lunch and Learn event that focuses on substance abuse in the workplace. This event will be held on Thursday, April 11 at noon in the Skyline National Bank’s Community Room in Floyd. Val Nelson will be speaking about how to recognize signs of substance abuse, what personnel policies and practices are recommended for being proactive and what to do when there is substance abuse in the workplace, how NRVCS can help, and the collective impact on the workplace and the community.

NRVCS is the public provider of behavioral health services to residents of the New River Valley. NRVCS offers community-based programs for both children and adults who are living with mental illness, developmental disabilities and/or substance use disorders. Established in 1969, NRVCS serves the counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski, and the City of Radford. New River Valley Community Services is part of a state-wide system of Community Services Boards, which serves residents throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. NRVCS is governed by a 13-member volunteer Board of Directors. Board members are appointed by the five local governments served by the agency.

Valanda “Val” Nelson was named Director of Human Services for NRVCS in October of 2018, after serving in an interim capacity for one year. Originally from Christiansburg, Val returned to the area after working in various capacities within the behavioral healthcare industry in the state of North Carolina. She has provided direct clinical services, advocacy services, and executive level leadership and management throughout her career. She is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist and a Certified Clinical Supervisor in NC and is also a Board-Certified Music Therapist. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Music Therapy from East Carolina University, and a 2nd Master’s Degree in Public Administration from The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She has been with NRVCS since 2016.
