The Appalachian Spirit Gallery celebrates its Second Friday ArtWalk on June 14 from 5-8 p.m. and will feature a special exhibit of new work by Appalachian Spirit Gallery member artists. Items in this show include paintings executed in oils, watercolors, acrylics, and mixed media. Other items being showcased are photography, jewelry, pottery, turned-wood items, quilts and fabric art, weaving, marquetry works, stained glass, and felted items.
A music concert will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature National Flatpicking Guitar Champion Scott Fore. The concert is free and open to the public, but listeners are urged to bring chairs or blankets for lawn seating. The concert will be moved inside in the case of inclement weather.
Fore is an internationally recognized guitarist, having won the National Flatpicking Championships held in Winfield, Kansas, each year. He is also the Doc Watson guitar champion and the Wayne Henderson Champion of Champions.
His honors and titles include 2002 and 2015 National Flatpicking Champion, second in 2000 and 2014; 2002 Doc Watson Flatpicking Champion; Wayne C. Henderson Champion of Champions winner; Old Galax Fiddlers Convention Best All-Around Performer; and two-time South Carolina State Flatpicking Champion. Fore was also recognized by Virginia Folklife and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities as a Virginia Master Folk Artist and appears in the book “In Good Keeping,” which documents the first five years of their master/apprentice program.
Fore’s performance highlights include the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Folk Festival, the Richmond Folk Festival, the Doc Watson Festival, the Grand Ole Opry with Aubrey Peeples, the Ferrum Folklife Festival and the Oak Grove Folk Festival.
The gallery is operated by the Appalachian Spirit Artists Association, a 501(c)3 organization composed of artisans who share jobs to fulfill the group’s mission to celebrate the arts, traditions, lore and spirit of the Appalachian Mountains by demonstrating the work of local talent.
The monthly Second Friday ArtWalk runs from May through December. The Appalachian Spirit Gallery is at 144 W. Main Street, Marion.
Events are free to the public and provide an opportunity for visitors to enjoy music, view art, browse crafts, and partake reception food.
