Tazewell held off Greater Beckley Christian and Graham dropped a heart breaker to James Monroe in second round Coppinger action April 6.
The Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead into the fifth inning on the way to a 9-4 win. The Crusaders plated three in the fifth and one in the seventh to make the final margin respectable.
Jonathan Davis had three hits and scored twice for Tazewell. He also went four and two third innings on the mound to earn the win. Cade Myers also had three hits and scored twice.
Ty Larimer had a triple, reached on an error and scored twice. Beckley Christian scored three times in the fifth with two outs. Jamir Blevins relieved Davis to stop the scoring and save the win.
Tazewell’s freshman duo of Davis and Will Collier each had a base hit and scored as the Bulldogs took control of the game in the sixth. The Crusaders threatened in the seventh with Andrew Patterson scoring on a hit by Grant Matherly.
Kagen Kidd teamed with Davis and Brayden Powers to cut down a runner and Blevins got a strikeout and ground it to end the game.
James Monroe scored two runs on passed balls to edge Graham. Howie Spencer of the G-Men and Brent Hazlewood of the Mavericks waged a pitching duel for five innings with the Mavericks holding a 1-0 lead.
Jon Oster singled in two runs to give Graham the lead in the sixth. The Mavericks used a walk, a single, a sacrifice and the two passed balls to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Jack Spencer singled with one out to give the G-Men hope in the seventh but a strikeout and a pop up ended thee game.
Tazewell finished it’s bracket 2-0 and Graham wrapped up bracket play at 1-1. Both teams will await the results of the Saturday and Monday games to see who they play in the round of eight.
