GRUNDY- The Lady Blues’ varsity basketball team traveled to Grundy on Tuesday, February 2 in search of their seventh straight victory and their sixth Southwest District victory of the season. Mission accomplished!
Richlands (9-6, 6-2 SWD) used a big third quarter burst that pulled the Blues out of a close, one-point halftime lead into a comfortable 10-point margin heading into the final frame and withstood a big fourth quarter run by Grundy (9-6, 4-2 SWD) to take a 56-50 decision to keep their win streak alive and well.
The first period ended in a 9-9 deadlock as each team felt the other out. The intensity started to pick up in the second chapter as Megan Robinson connected on two of her three treys in the game for RHS. Robinson finished as the game’s leading scorer and rebounder as the junior turned in a double-double with 11 boards. She hit some clutch free throws down the stretch, making 7-of-8 charity shots in the contest, five of six in the fourth frame.
Robinson got plenty of help from freshman center Rachel Alley who tossed in 12 points and blocked two shots on defense. Cassidy Richardson and Evan Ferrell each managed eight points. Ferrell had eight rebounds and Richardson five as the Lady Blues owned a 35-34 margin on the boards. Cassie Ringstaff finished with four points and Kelli Hess two.
Loni Webb came up big for the Lady Wave, nailing five treys and posting 17 points. She also blocked a pair of shots. Samantha Owens joined Webb in double figure scoring with 12 points. Richlands held a huge advantage in free throws, making 15-of-25 foul shots while Grundy managed 6-of-7.
