George Wythe boys’ cross country team wins district meet

The George Wythe boys’ cross country team won the Hogoheegee District meet held Wednesday afternoon at Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol.
The GW girls’ cross country team placed third in the meet. The top four teams and the top 15 individuals qualify for the Region C meet, which will be held Nov. 5 at the Botetourt Sports Complex.
The GW boys’ team was led by Owen Morgan and Hunter Mills, who finished second and third, respectively, in 17:44 and 17:56. Craig Wilson of GW placed seventh in 18:43 and Austin Thomas was 12th in 19:49.
The GW girls’ team was led by DeAnna Hedgepeth who finished second in 21:17. Also placing in the top 15 for the GW girls was Catherine Barbrow who was 14th in 26:40.
The Rural Retreat boys’ team placed fifth in the meet and the RR girls had an incomplete team.
The Fort Chiswell boys’ and girls’ teams were also incomplete, but two Pioneer runners qualified for the regionals in the Mountain Empire District meet, which was held at the Southwest Virginia Training Center in Hillsville. Cody Hanks of Fort Chiswell placed 12th in 21:42, and Erika Landgren was fifth in 25:51.
