Buffs fall at Patrick County
Quarterback Jacob Reynolds had two long touchdown runs to lead Patrick County to a 12-7 win over the Floyd County varsity football team at Stuart Friday, September 11. The loss dropped the Buffaloes to a 1-2 record.
The Buffaloes held Reynolds and the Cougars to negative yardage on the game’s first possession and forced a three-and-out and a punt. A tackle behind the line on third and four forced Floyd to exchange punts.
Patrick County got one first down on the next drive. Then Joey Conduff came up with a big sack on Reynolds on a third down play and forced the second Cougar punt.
This time Daniel Bradford returned the kick 38 yard to the Patrick 37. On fourth and eight at the 29, Matt Hollandsworth dropped the shotgun snap, but scrambled nine yards for a first down. The drive stalled and Floyd lost the ball on downs at the 23 on the final play of the first quarter.
The Buffs got their first third down conversion on the opening drive of the second quarter. On third and five, Hollandsworth hit Bradofrd for 11 yards to the Cougar 45.
The drive stalled but Cole Peters punted to the nine. Patrick was able to reverse the field by picking up four first downs. When the Cougars punted, Floyd started again at the 11.
Chandler Jones picked up first downs on runs of ten and four, but the halftime clock expired without a score.
Floyd started the third quarter as Jones returned the kickoff to the 24. Hollandsworth and Matt Link had consecutive 11 yard carries, and Jones cross midfield for a first down at the Cougar 47. But Jones fumbled on the next play with the Cougars recovering.
Josh Walker sandwiched runs of five and four around a Buffalo offsides penalty to get the ball across midfield. Then Reynolds won the sprint to the right edge and went down the sideline for a 49 yard touchdown. Reynolds missed the PAT kick and Patrick led 6-0 at 8:19.
The Buffaloes answered with their only scoring drive of the night, going 74 yards in 4:20. Tyler Carr returned the kickoff 16 yards.
Hollandsworth hit Caz Cantrell with a nine yard pass and Jones ran for 12 to the 47. Hollandsworth was sacked but followed with consecutive completions to Cole Peters, for 23 yards on a screen and for 12 in the left flat.
That moved the ball to the Patrick 26. Hollandsworth ran for seven and Jones added nine to put the ball at the ten.
Jones added three more, and Hollandsworth stretched into the end zone at the end of a seven yard carry. Nelson Morales kicked the PAT and Floyd led 7-6 at 3:59.
The Buffs got the ball back on a punt in the closing seconds of the third quarter. Early in the fourth Floyd punted, and seemed to have the Cougars in the hole at the ten. But a double penalty on the punt moved the ball to the 34.
On the next play, Reynolds faked a handoff and blew up the middle and sprinted for a 66 yard touchdown. Reynolds misfired on the two point PAT pass attempt and Patrick led 12-7 at 11:26.
The Buffs had a three and out, but got the ball back on last time with 7:02 remaining, with Bradford returning the punt 28 yards to the Patrick 47. On third and six, Hollandsworth hit Bradford with an 18 yard pass to the 25.
On third and two, Jones had a two yard carry to the 15. On fourth and four Hollandsworth hit Jones with a short pass and he carried the ball close to the five. After a measurement, Floyd was inches short and gave up the ball on downs. Patrick was able to pick up one first down and run out the clock.
