Boys’ cross country team competing in state meet Saturday
The Floyd County boys’ cross country team won the Region C championship at the Greenfield course in Botetourt Thursday. As was the case in the district meet the week before, the battle for first was between Floyd and Radford. The Floyd team will compete at the state contest this Saturday in Manassas.
All Group championships will be held at the site, beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is $9.00.
Austin Grubb won the event, and his brother Andrew Grubb was fourth. Vijay Guruswamy and Jared Miller of Radford finished second and third. Each team had five points from its top two finishers.
The Buffaloes clinched the title with the strong showing of the three-through-five runners. Cole Conley was seventh, Eden Keith was eighth and Riley St. Pierre was 18th, giving Floyd a 37-53 advantage in team points.
“They were really intent on winning this,” said coach Dawn Weeks. “Practice was a few less miles, but just as intense.”
“This is a real tough course,” Austin Grubb said. “There aren’t a lot of big hills but there are a lot of small up and down hills and part of the course slopes to the side.
“This is a horse course as well as a running course, so there are a lot irregularities in the ground. Plus, we also have to run through a creek.”
Floyd will compete in the Group A state meet at Great Meadows in Manassas Saturday. “I told them they could have the day off tomorrow, but they want to keep running,” Weeks said.
