Tourney timeThe Hogoheegee District and Mountain Empire District boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments continue throughout this week.
Both districts’ girls’ tourneys began Monday night. The Fort Chiswell and George Wythe girls’ teams both received byes to the semifinal round.

George Wythe outruns Patrick HenryEven though George Wythe was without the services of Devin Smith, who has the highest three point shooting percentage on the team, due to recovering from a cold, the Maroons teamed up to combine for a total of 10 three-pointers to crush the Rebels 95-46 Friday night in Glade Spring.

Cavs claim victory over IndiansThe Holston Cavaliers held off a late rally by Rural Retreat to take a 61-54 victory over the Indians in a Hogoheegee District boys’ basketball game played Friday night at RRHS.
The Indians led throughout most of the first quarter, but the Cavaliers took control of the game with solid second and third quarters to build up a 12-point lead going into the final period.
Rural Retreat made a moderate run over the last couple of minutes of the game to make a bid for its first win of the season, but Holston was able to convert three of its five attempts from the free throw line and kept up its defensive pressure to get the win.

Lady Indians top RebelsThe Rural Retreat Lady Indians used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Patrick Henry Lady Rebels 42-37 in a Hogoheegee District girls’ basketball game played Friday night at RRHS.
The game was close throughout with neither team rarely able to enjoy more than a three-point margin. The game was tied at halftime, and the Lady Rebels led during most of the third quarter and took a three-point advantage in the final period.

Season’s endIt was a big season for the Holston Cavaliers.
Coach Jason Matlock said when team members handed in their equipment Monday they talked about how they still want to be playing.
The Cavs lost last Friday night to Bath County (27-20) in the beginning round of the Region C, Division 1 playoffs.

Indians get past Rebels for playoff slotThe Rural Retreat Indians assured themselves a spot in the Region C playoffs with a 39 to 13 win over the Patrick Henry Rebels Friday night at Community Stadium. Rural Retreat finished the regular season with a 7-3 record.

Football FridayEven though the Rural Retreat Middle School football team lost a close game to Glenvar Thursday night, the team has already assured itself of having an excellent season.
Glenvar defeated RRMS 42-35, but that was only the second loss of the season for the Indians.

Maroons top CavaliersGeorge Wythe, behind the rushing attack led by Larry McCoy defeated the Holston Cavaliers 42-0 in a Hogoheegee District game played Friday night in Damascus.
The Maroons struck quickly after forcing Holston to punt. In two plays George Wythe covered 47 yards to strike pay dirt. McCoy scampered 21 yards for the first score.
