Radio celebrity is ready to help area women destressWomen of Southwest Virginia: On Friday night, the laundry can wait. There’s no need to consider cleaning out closets. Put on pajamas and plan on an evening of food, talk, pampering and no stress.
That’s the message radio personality Sheri Lynch wants to get out about WZVA-Z103.5’s girls’-night-out event set for this Friday in Marion.

Care workers seeking changesDotti Adams usually has time to herself in the mornings, before she wakes her husband, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
She also gets a chance to go grocery shopping, or to the movies, when a personal care assistant comes to her home, about 20 to 25 hours each week.
The rest of the time, Adams is on her own.
The county’s school system has had its eye on a number of renovations and additions to schools dotted around the county.
The first real step in getting those improvements finished has already been taken.
It was big hit at last year’s Virginia Highlands Festival, even scoring an extended showing at the Abingdon Cinemall.
Now, writer/director/producer Rick McVey his hoping to take his movie to the next level – distribution. McVey’s company, McVey Multimedia, recently signed a deal with Westlake Village, Calif.,-based Circus Road Films to act as the film’s representative. McVey said the move is the equivalent of an actor hiring an agent.
The sheer number of friends, students and mourners who turned out to pay tribute to Phil Lineberry last week at Holston High School is evidence enough of his impact on the community.

U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher says a greener America is in the works, and it’s one that will leave a smaller carbon footprint while still powered by coal.
Boucher, a Democrat and chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality, said fashioning America’s response to climate change will be the biggest challenge of the coming. The committee is drafting legislation to control greenhouse gas emissions, Boucher said, noting that the United States is the only industrialized nation without such a program.

First baby of 2008A purple bow lay crooked on Alafair Winter Smith’s tiny, bald head.
She doesn’t know it yet but she is the first Southwest Virginia baby born in 2008.
At 9:24 a.m. on January 1 Wilma Powers, 21, gave birth to the five pound, 10 ounce and 19 inch long Alafair at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
