Town Council sworn inOn Wednesday, Abingdon town officials swore in newly elected Town Council member Jason Berry and council veteran Ed Morgan.
Though there was little fanfare, both men happily accepted their positions on the board.
“It’s an honor just to be elected to office,” said Berry.

A show by and for ‘Car Nuts’On Saturday, July 5, area residents can expect to hear engines roar, see paint-jobs shining and chrome gleaming as the Car Nuts Car Club rolls into town with its seventh annual car show. The event will take place in Chilhowie at the Chilhowie Recreation Park just off Exit 35 of Interstate 81.

Highlands organizers chasing teensVirginia Highlands Festival organizers hope several new events added to this year’s schedule will make the annual festival more appealing to teenagers.
The state yesterday gave Dominion Virginia Power permission to build a $1.8 billion power plant in Wise County but slashed the amount of pollution it would be allowed to emit.

Hospital gets COPNJohnston Memorial Hospital’s plans to build a new facility off U.S. Highway 11 got a green light from the state recently.
The state Health Commissioner approved the hospital’s Certificate of Public Need.
Sherman “Bubby” Pippin’s been working on cars a long time.
At 8 years old, back when people drove tires until they were wore through, he’d fix flats for a dollar a piece.
One summer he made $300, enough to buy himself a cow.

Mechanic shares gas-saving strategiesJeremy Ferguson is a nice guy. The Meadowview native is self-employed. He, along with a couple of helpers, operates Lawn Specialists, a business providing full-service lawn care to residential and commercial customers. According to Ferguson, he has customers from “Chilhowie to Kingsport (Tenn.).” He said he tries to keep his prices reasonable, enough to make a living and still be affordable for his customers. Asked how many yards he mows a week, he smiled, wiped the sweat off his face and said, “In weather like this it seems like about a million.” Like for most people, the rising cost of fuel is impacting Ferguson.

Bradshaw held in Abingdon jailNew York Giants running back and former Graham High School star Ahmad Bradshaw is currently being held in the Abingdon regional jail facility. Bradshaw reportedly violated his probation and there is currently no timetable set for his release, nor is there bond amount.
