Medal manThe number is 24 and counting. That’s the number of medals Trenton Crockett has compiled from the Coventry Commonwealth Games.
Crockett added two more to his collection after competition in this year’s Games. His two events this year were the shot put and the discus throw.
Kenny Peeples Jr. of Rural Retreat did everything that he was supposed to do, but unfortunately a weather forecast for the July 28th scheduled FASTRAK series race forced track officials to postpone the FASTRAK race at Wythe Raceway, thus postponing Peeples chance at a $1,000 Exit 54 Exxon Road to the Nationals bonus until Saturday night, Aug. 4, and that cost him not only the $1,000 bonus, but also a $2,000 payday in the FASTRAK series event.

Martial arts team wins medalsTen students from Southwest Martial Arts Academy recently competed in this year’s State Karate Championships event at the 2007 Virginia Commonwealth Games.
The students won a total of 21 medals at the annual Games. The karate championship was held in Roanoke on July 21.
The team from the Southwest Martial Arts Academy of Wytheville won a total of 21 medals.
Kenny Peeples, Jr. of Rural Retreat had been preparing all week for the $2,000 to win FASTRAK Racing Series event at Wythe Raceway, but on Friday evening with the forecast for Saturday being 70 percent chance of rain, the speedway decided to move the FASTRAK Southern Series race to next Saturday night, Aug. 4, to help eliminate the possibility of the series regulars traveling from as far away as Alabama and not getting to race.

Umberger and McMahan take first career wins at WytheDuring a special Monday night race at Wythe Raceway, the half mile high banked dirt superspeedway, young Cody Umberger of Rural Retreat captured his first career victory in the Hornet Division and Leon McMahan of Marion scored his first win in the U-Cars.
The Wythe Bowhunters Archery Club hosted the National Field Archery state championships on June 23 & 24.
