Rural Retreat runs over BlandThe Rural Retreat Indians advanced to the Region C finals by defeating the Bland County Bears 34-12 Friday night.
Both teams had plenty of support from the stands that braved the cold, windy weather. David Harrison led the Indians by churning up almost 200 rushing yards, with Michael Mills chipping in over 100. Several Indians came up for the defense. Michael Smith, Terry Mutter, Terry Fields, Jared Dix, Jeremy Cregger, Justin Stoneman, Kyle Testerman, Josh Kaulfuss and Harrison were names that were heard often.
Chris Scott of George Wythe was one of the top honorees among the All-Hogoheegee District golf team.
The George Wythe Maroons found the best way possible to keep warm on a cold night in a Region C, Division 2 football game played on Friday. They kept running through the Grayson County defense and then found themselves jumping up and down to celebrate touchdowns.

Narrows squeaks by Fort ChiswellPhillip Arnold of Fort Chiswell played his heart out in the team’s final game of the year. Arnold passed for 168 yards, completed 10 of his 28 passes, threw for a touchdown and ran for another.
But it wasn’t enough as a late touchdown by the Narrows Green Wave and a gutsy call handed the Fort Chiswell Pioneers their ninth loss and a fifth place finish in the Mountain Empire District.
Brett Buracker proved to be the undoing of the Pioneers on a rain soaked field at Narrows. Buracker caught the go-ahead touchdown with 2:11 left on the clock and then picked off a Pioneer pass with just over a minute to play to seal the victory for the Green Wave.
It was barely more than a week ago that Don “Butchie” Cline stepped into a boxing ring for the first time in his life.
It was for an organized boxing match. And Cline won.

If the Fort Chiswell Pioneers didn’t know who Korey Kennedy was, they do now. He chalked up 209 yards rushing this past Friday night as the Bland County Bears handed Fort Chiswell its eighth loss of the season, 48-21 at the Fort.
