PREVIEW: Wrestlers look for another big yearThe Rural Retreat wrestling team placed sixth in the Group A state meet last year. While that in itself would have to be considered a ultra-successful season, it wasn’t quite as good as the season before that. That shows how far the Indian wrestling program has come in recent years.
When Rural Retreat Head Coach Quinton Hensley went to his first girls’ basketball practice, he saw a lot of new faces and realized he would have a different cast this season.
Graduation hit Hensley and the Lady Indians hard as they lost four starters and two reserves.
Ropes, hoops, balls, clubs and ribbons will gracefully fly through the air today as competitors in the 2007 USA Gymnastics Rhythmic Group Championships take over the Wytheville Community Center.
Gymnasts from across the nation will be competing in a variety of skill levels in the event co-hosted by USA Gymnastics and Princeton Gymnastics and Dance Academy.
Kristina Sklioutovskaya and her husband, Manny Lopez, run the Princeton, W. Va., academy and Sklioutovskaya said they found out in October that their bid won to host the competition.
“It is the first time in history it will be in Virginia,” she said. “It’s a lot of preparation.”

Gate City stops George Wythe’s post-season runThere was a no parking law at Legion Field in Gate City on Saturday and Tyler Parks made sure that there were no violations.
Parks ran for 212 yards on 44 carries and two scores to lead the Blue Devils to a 21-14 win over the George Wythe Maroons in a Group A, Division 2 state semifinal football game.
George Wythe became a one-dimensional team as the Blue Devil defense took away the vaunted running game that had been spearheaded by Seth White and Larry McCoy all season.
The Fort Chiswell Lady Pioneers made the short bus ride to George Wythe Friday night for a non-district girls’ basketball contest.
In a whistle-filled game, the Lady Maroons came out on top 78-61. Ashley Buchanan had a game-high 31 points for GW while teammate Lacey Price added 30.
