Weekend busy for Rural Retreat fire departmentThe weekend wasn’t a relaxing time for the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department.
Wytheville’s Ruby Tuesday underwent a recent redesign with no interruption of service at the restaurant. The $100,000 project was completed by a local contractor working from midnight to 11 a.m. over a five-week period.

Service and sacrificesJanice Spencer Sutherland was a junior at Fort Chiswell High School on May 21, 1969. She was in an afternoon class that day when the principal came with the news that her older brother, Kenneth Darrell Spencer, had been killed in Vietnam.
Like most local motorists, Wythe County service agencies are adjusting their budgets as fuel costs rise over $3 per gallon. The public school system and the sheriff’s office are being hardest hit since they operate the largest fleets.
Budgets may be tight across the country, but the financial crunch appears to have skipped Wythe County Public Schools for now.

Man charged with sexual abuseA 22-year-old Wythe County man is in jail after being accused of sex crimes involving a juvenile female. Samuel Marvin Kuykendall of Sheffey School Road is charged with taking indecent liberties with a child and aggravated sexual battery.
An empty seat could hardly be found Tuesday night in the Wythe County Board of Supervisors meeting room as a substantial crowd gathered for the start of the group’s meeting.
But it wasn’t a controversial issue or rumors of a spirited public hearing that brought out the community this time.
The Virginia General Assembly passed a bill last week to tighten restrictions on commercial dog breeders, adding another piece of animal rights legislation to a session that saw animal welfare issues brought to the forefront of the legislative agenda.
A zoning ordinance amendment prohibiting on-frame modular homes in certain Wytheville residential districts passed officially Monday evening. It restricts such structures from areas zoned R-1, R-1A and R-1M but does not affect any already located in these districts.
