Man charged in stabbingA 34-year-old Max Meadows man remains at a Roanoke hospital after being stabbed Tuesday night. Dennis Wayne Dunford sustained a stab wound to the ribs around 7:10 p.m. and was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Phyllis C. Ashworth and Julia Jackson-King have been honored with Distinguished Service and Teaching Awards from Wytheville Community College. Ashworth received the Distinguished Service Award and Jackson-King was announced as the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at the college’s annual Honors Convocation held May 7.

Crashes kill one, injure anotherA Narrows man was killed and a Max Meadows man was injured on Friday afternoon in related crashes on Wytheville’s interstates.
According to the Virginia State Police, 62-year-old Haven Lonnie Dobbins Sr. died after being thrown from his Harley Davidson motorcycle at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Dobbins was riding south on Interstate 77 near its intersection with Interstate 81 when he ran off the left side of the roadway and hit a culvert, police said. Dobbins died at the scene, and the cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
Fees, resolutions and the possibility of saving 3 million bucks kept the Wythe County Board of Supervisors busy during its Tuesday morning meeting.

A delay in a bridge project south of Barren Springs has tested the patience of nearby residents, but a Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman said Monday that the project should be back on track next week.

Rail Solution has launched a grassroots campaign urging Gov. Timothy Kaine to overturn a decision by his commerce secretary that blocks the Virginia Department of Transportation from accepting federal grant funding for a Steel Interstate study.Rail Solution retained the Virginia Organizing Project to distribute a bulletin asking recipients “to urge Governor Tim Kaine to overrule his Secretary of Transportation.” The bulletin said VDOT Secretary Pierce Homer last month blocked the agency’s receipt of “a federal grant for the study even if Congress were to authorize one.”
