STRICTLY OBSERVING: Salve-ationAs is customarily the case during the harshness of the cold winter months, as of lately, I have been battling more than my share of sinus infections and colds. Whenever I am sick, I cannot help but think of my late great-great-aunt Hazel. Hazel fretted incessantly every time anyone in the family was the slightest bit under the weather. If you sneezed once, she would fill you full of Benadryl. If your stomach was the slightest bit upset, she would force you to take Pepto Bismol, as my mother will tell you. She didn’t exclude herself from the equation either.
Hello from Capitol Hill in Richmond!
This week was crossover, which always comes at the half-way point of General Assembly Session. Crossover, which this year fell on Tuesday, February 12, is the day in which all House bills must be communicated to the Senate and all Senate bills to the House. This meant a lot of work on the House floor. The Session convened on Monday at ten a.m., and we did not finish debate and floor votes until just before eight p.m.

FAIRVIEW: EponymousMy great-uncle, in whose house my family now lives, once sent around a Christmas card 40-some years ago, in which he attributed his longevity and health to climbing the hills around his home. “My health comes from a twice-a-day view,” he said.

PERSPECTIVE: Rural Retreat renovationsAs the first school in Wythe County to be fully accredited with SOL scores, Rural Retreat does what one teacher says, “the most with the least.” With a rising controversy about the school renovations and the budget cut, Rural Retreat High School is ready for a positive change to help boost academic and athletic success.
Back in the days when I was one of those trash bag-wearing, spitting-in-a-cup high school wrestlers, there was one guy I hated to see waiting to shake hands more than any other.

OUR VIEW: Payday lenders? Lend them a handWe believe that people ought to have the right to do stupid things. Drive without seat belts? Sure. Ride motorcycles sans helmets? Absolutley. Smoke cigarettes? Without a doubt. Visit payday lender shops that sometimes look a lot like a kinder, gentler, non-kneecap-busting loan shark? Umm.
Anita Baker has always been the greatest love songstress of our time. With the release of such classic albums as Rapture and Giving You the Best That I Got her incomparable voice became a household name in the 1980s. Referred to by many as the female equivalent to Luther Vandross due to her crooning style of rhythm and blues, Baker has always possessed an incomparable voice that few have dared to rival.
They were discussing too many Alberts at the barn. Old Blue Rosenbloom was happy because he read that Wythe Albert was going to be doing the NBA games on TNT through the 2016 basketball season.
