Maroons clinch HogoSeth White scored the go-ahead touchdown with only one second left in the game to give the George Wythe Maroons a 14-7 victory over the Chilhowie Warriors Friday night at Pendleton Field.
The victory also allowed the Maroons to clinch the Hogoheegee District championship. GW finishes its regular season at 5-0 in the district and 9-1 overall. The Maroons automatically earn a berth in the Region C, Division 2 playoffs.

Rural Retreat routs PanthersThe Rural Retreat Indians improved their record to 6-1 Friday night by routing the Northwood Panthers 59-7 in a Hogoheegee District football game played at Community Stadium.
The win also allowed the Indians to remain tied for first place in the district with George Wythe and Chilhowie, all with 2-0 district slates.

Nortwood top teamNorthwood was the top team in a cross country meet held Wednesday afternoon at Rural Retreat Lake.
The Northwood girls’ team defeated Bland 27-49. The Northwood boys’ team also had the low score of 29 compared to Fort Chiswell with 69 and Bland County with 83. In addition to Rural Retreat, Fort Chiswell and Bland County, also competing in the meet were runners from Chilhowie.

Panther defeat PioneersThe Fort Chiswell Pioneer football team traveled to Saltville on Friday night as they battled the Northwood Panthers.
The Panthers celebrated their homecoming with a victory as they defeated the Pioneers 35-19.

Wythe raceway previewThis Saturday night at the high banked, half mile dirt super speedway of Wythe Raceway it will be Ladies Night with the first 3,000 Ladies admitted free in the Grandstands!
This will be the first Ladies Night at Wythe Raceway and the stands are expected to be full as the ladies get treated to an entire program of racing action headlined with the Exit 54 Exxon Late Model Division.

Raceway resultsKenny Peeples, Jr. of Rural Retreat had been preparing all week for the $2,000 to win FASTRAK Racing Series event at Wythe Raceway, but on Friday evening with the forecast for Saturday being 70 percent chance of rain, the speedway decided to move the FASTRAK Southern Series race to next Saturday night, Aug. 4, to help eliminate the possibility of the series regulars traveling from as far away as Alabama and not getting to race.
