Motorcycle wreck kills oneA 57-year-old Mississippi man is dead after losing control of his motorcycle on Interstate 81 Sunday.
William David of Ocean Springs, Miss., was traveling northbound in the interstate’s passing lane on a 2006 Suzuki, a Virginia State Police spokeswoman said Monday, reading from Trooper L.J. Testerman’s incident report.

Ben pawed and scratched furiously at a metal box that yielded a drug-scented towel that was both his objective and his reward. Paschal shrieked and whooped high-pitch praises that are music to narcotics-finding dogs’ ears.
They had to bring in extra chairs.
Officers from the county’s three police departments, the sheriff’s office and the Virginia State Police filled half of the Chilhowie Town Council chamber as the Thursday’s council meeting began, and soon they, along with everyone crowded into the room, were on their feet, applauding one of their own who narrowly escaped death in the line of duty last month.
“This is the biggest crowd we ever had,” Mayor Gary Heninger remarked as the meeting began.
Saltville Police Investigator Gary Call is no longer a member of the department, the third law enforcement agency in the region beleaguered this year by fired officers facing criminal charges.
The town’s council voted 6-0 in closed session Tuesday night to terminate Call’s employment, according to Saltville Town Manager Steve Johnson. Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act permits public bodies to meet behind closed doors for discussion of personnel matters.

Marion Town Council last month gave its blessing and a promise of $5,000 over two years to a proposed mountain music museum in downtown.
The museum, which will be co-sponsored by The Song of the Mountains and the Appalachian Cultural Music Association, will be located in the old Baldwin’s building between the General Francis Marion Hotel and the Lincoln Theatre.
Tom Makowski made waves in Saltville Tuesday, months before the wave pool he will build this fall opens. Turns out he may help the town address a public restroom relocation project at the Little League field while he’s in town.
