Tonya Wright named to all-state first teamFormer Bland County girls’ basketball standout Tonya Wright, who is now a junior forward at Ferrum College, has been named to the 2009 VaSID College Division Women’s Basketball All-State first team as selected by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association

Big Walker Century Ride raises funds for charityWhile Chautauqua participants were preparing for a big opening day, cyclists gathered early Saturday morning to participate in the 6th annual Big Walker Century Ride.

Decked out in their tennis shoes, tank tops and toothy grins, approximately 30 girls turned out at Rocky Gap schools on Saturday to learn how to jump, twist and shout their way to becoming the cheerleaders of tomorrow.

Sarver and Mustard capture state doubles championshipPrior to the Group A state girls’ doubles championship tennis match at Radford University on June 13 that featured Bland County players Grace Sarver and Kirby Mustard, Bears’ coach Ashleigh Beasley referred to Gate City opponents Tori Bowen and Morgan Taylor as ‘the victims.’
One down, three to go. It might not be good to put the cart before the horse but if action from last Thursday’s Group A girls’ tennis singles championship is any indication, it just might be alright.
The Sarver name has been a common one when it comes to tennis in these parts for many years.

Lady Bears beat Bath County, but lose to Radford in tennisBland County won its first ever girls’ tennis team regional match, dominating five of six singles matches and rolling past the undercharged Bath County Chargers 5-1 in semifinal action from the Region C tournament played at Virginia Tech on May 27.
As a four-year member of the Bland County Bears varsity football team, Rocky Gap High School senior Josh Shrader made a name for himself, especially during his junior and senior seasons

Bland County Lady Bears defeat TazewellBland County closed out its 2009 softball regular season on a winning note as the Bears blanked homestanding Tazewell 5-0 on May 14.
After helping Bland County’s Bears win their first ever MED girls’ team tennis championship, freshman Grace Sarver and junior Kirby Mustard went out and won singles and doubles championships in the individual tournament played on May 19 and 20 at Grayson County High School in Independence.
