Traveling across Europe, finding a wife, being a part of history in the making – serving in the military has suited Maj. Benjamin Bird just fine.
Bird, a 1991 George Wythe High School graduate, currently is at war in Iraq. But even difficult days in the scorching heat haven’t deterred his love for his job.

A Bland County man has been charged in connection with a Thursday evening traffic fatality on U.S. 52 in Wythe County.
Virginia State Police Trooper J.G. Armstrong arrested Melvin Chadwick Compton of Bland late Friday night.

Bland resident dies in Wythe wreckA 49-year-old Bland man became Wythe County’s fourth fatality since May. Stanley Joel Tickle died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Thursday evening on U.S. 52.
According to Sgt. M.T. Conroy of the Virginia State Police, Tickle was a passenger in a 1997 Ford Explorer operated by his cousin whom police declined to identify. He was thrown from the vehicle, which was traveling north on Route 52, 2.2 miles north of Virginia 717.
