County declares local emergencySevere drought conditions have prompted the Bland County Board of Supervisors to declare a state of local emergency. All open air burning is now prohibited and conserving water is recommended.
An emergency was declared Oct. 4 and will remain in effect until further notice. The resolution was signed by John C. Thompson, director of emergency services and vice chairman of the Bland County Board of Supervisors; and Jonathan D. Sweet, county administrator and deputy director and emergency services coordinator.
Most Bland County motorists are familiar with the winding section of Byrnes Chapel Road (Rt. 738) that leads to Route 100 in Pulaski County. They are aware of the numerous horseshoe curves and the steep grade.

Grading policy solidifiedThe Bland County School Board solidified its policy Monday night on how to convert grades from students who take off-site classes on a different grading scale.
Trial is scheduled Oct. 12 for a Bastian man arrested in last spring’s drug roundup in Tazewell County.
A Wytheville Main Street landmark and three related properties sold for more than $1 million at public auction last Wednesday. The R.P. Johnson & Sons building, the Williams Supply Inc. site, an adjoining lot and a vacant lot were auctioned separately.
