Chamber awards presentedThe late Stephen A. Lester Sr. was remembered Monday evening as an active industry and community leader. Lester, who died July 31, was the posthumous recipient of the Stanley N. King Sr. Outstanding Citizenship Award during the annual Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce Inc. Membership Dinner Meeting.
At the time of his death, Lester was owner/employee of Wordsprint and Professional Networks/Wiredog in Wytheville and Galax. He was retired from Ewald-Lester/Blue Ridge Insurance Agencies in Wytheville.
A former state archeologist whose early excavations in Bland County indirectly led to the founding of the Wolf Creek Indian Village and Museum has died. Col. Howard A. MacCord Sr. of Midlothian was 93.
“Colonel MacCord had been here several times,” noted Penny Plummer, co-director of the Wolf Creek Indian Village and Museum in the Hicksville community of Bland County. “October is archaeology month and he had made several talks for us. He was very supportive.”
Global economic troubles have hit home in Bastian as a dozen employees of General Injectables and Vaccines lost their jobs last week.
Bland County Administrator Jonathan Sweet said that he was informed last week that 12 of the company’s approximately 200 employees had been laid off.
“I most certainly was surprised,” Sweet said.

Benefit ride to aid biker’s familyMotorcyclists are known for their concern and support of each other. They always rally to a cause affecting one of their own.
Bland County’s theater team had no trouble remembering its lines or cues on the way to its first Mountain Empire District championship last month.
But remembering its prize turned out to be a more difficult task.
Some went Republican, others went Democrat.
But there was one common thought going through the minds of 18-year-olds in Bland and Wythe counties as they cast their first votes last week.

Bland Countians give McCain, Warner edgeSen. John McCain’s bid for presidency got a whopping endorsement from Bland County voters Tuesday. According to preliminary results from the state Board of Elections Web site, voters here picked the McCain/Gov. Sarah Palin ticket by nearly a 70 percent margin. The Republicans receives 68.62 percent, or 2,030 votes, compared to the 864 cast for Sen. Barack Obama and Joe Biden on the Democrat side of aisle.
It’s the edge of sundown at Virginia City.
There were no Election Day losers Tuesday in Bland County. Democrats, Republicans and independents all agreed the winner was the annual ham and turkey dinner from the Women’s Ministry of Bastian Union Church.
