UPDATED: Wytheville residence damaged in fire
A Wytheville kitchen was scorched and a resident injured on Monday night after an electric stove caught fire at 1275 West North St.
According to Wytheville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ronnie King, Jessica Glass suffered a sprained ankle getting out of her residence after the fire started at approximately 10 p.m.
King said flames were shooting from the back of the two-story structure when firefighters got there.
On Friday, Glass said the fire started while cheese sticks were being heated on top of the stove. A stove eye had previously thrown sparks, she said.
Glass, another adult and her two children were at home when the blaze ignited. Glass said she was in the living room when she saw smoke and flames coming from the kitchen. She sprained her ankle while retrieving her children from the second story of the smoke-filled residence.
Using two trucks, 13 firefighters fought the blaze for two and a half hours.
The fire damage was contained to the kitchen, King said, but the entire residence sustained heavy smoke damage.
Glass said her family had already found another place to live and that the family received assistance from the Red Cross.
