Council nixes stop signs

There will be no additional stop signs at Fairway Lane and Sherwood Forest Road. That was Wytheville Town Council’s decision Monday evening after another report from the town’s public works committee.
The request came several weeks ago from Country Club Estates resident, Rhonda Cregger. She asked council to install a three-way stop for the intersection of Fairway Lane and Sherwood Forest Lane for safety reasons.
Councilman John W. Jones Jr., a member of the committee, presented the results of a requested vehicle study of the area. He noted police conducted the study during a four-day period.
According to the study, 665 vehicles were tracked. Of these, 370 were traveling up to 25 mph with 248 traveling between 26 and 30 mph. Forty-six of the vehicles were clocked at 31 to 40 mph with one traveling between 41 and 50 mph.
Of the total vehicles, 618 were traveling between 0 and 30 mph, which is the posted speed limit.
Jones told council the police department’s database did not note any accidents occurring at the intersection.
“In addition, we have received numerous comments from residents within the neighborhood who are opposed to additional stop signs being installed at this intersection,” he stated. “As a result of the information we have available, we agree that the installation of additional stop signs at this location is not warranted at this time. It is the recommendation of the public works committee that we do not install additional stop signs at this location.”
Jones noted that his committee and council appreciate Cregger’s inquiry and had duly considered her request.
In other action Monday evening, council:
Approved a request from Ron Hughes of Pioneer Properties LLC for a special exemption permit to build additional rental units on property on the south side of Holston Road between Fourth Street and Cove Road.
Authorized the execution of documents associated with the proposed Jefferson Union Housing Project by the Wytheville Redevelopment and Housing Authority.
Appointed J. Daniel Challgren to the Southwest Regional Enterprise Center Board. His appointment would be to fill the term which expires June 30, 2011.
Re-appointed Lisa H. Lester and Susan S. Wisman to the Wytheville Industrial Development Authority. Their terms will expire Dec. 12.
Set Monday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. for a public hearing on applications for certificates of public convenience and necessity. Town code requires taxicabs and public vehicles to be certified each calendar year.

The town’s traffic studies are still conducted the old fashioned way with the rubber hoses stretched across the road. Most drivers slow down by at least 5 mph when they spot the hoses across the road. Add that 5 mph to the figures and you see a much worse problem. BTW, I believe Wytheville tried the new electronic “radar based” traffic study equipment but didn’t like the data they saw.
Stop signs only work if the traffic laws are enforced. As we all know… They aren’t in Wytheville.
