Things were a little crazy at the Rural Retreat High School auditorium Friday night. Students danced, sang, cried, laughed and tried to save the villagers from an impending flood.
Fortunately all these antics were played out under harmless hypnosis by master hypnotist Jason Linett.

The house has been rebuilt; the physical wounds have healed some, but the psychological damage from a deadly 2008 shooting rampage and arson in eastern Wythe County is still raw.
“I’m scared every day of my life,” a tearful Sharon Bane told a judge on Monday afternoon during the sentencing hearing for the 60-year-old man convicted of gunning down her husband, wounding her father, sexually propositioning her stepson, burning down her house and shooting a police officer who tried to help.

Armstrong brings ApCo fight to WCC

The same stories keep repeating themselves, Delegate Ward Armstrong said Saturday.
They’re the stories of people trying to make ends meet on reduced salaries being shocked by a $500 power bill. It’s the story of the woman wearing hats and gloves indoors to keep heating bills down, even as the bills continue to climb, taking 60 percent of her income. Or the one of the woman choosing to cut back on medicine. Or the woman who owns an unoccupied rental, using very little electricity to speak of yet still getting hit with a bill north of $300.

Meet Emily

Southwest Virginia Governor’s School presents countless opportunities to high-achieving students across the region. While it is an institution focused on math, science and technology, many of its students selected to attend have greater interest in the arts, such as music or writing. SWVGS gives students of all interests an opportunity to participate in internships at the workplace of their choosing during the spring semester of their junior year. These internships allow juniors to experience a prospective profession and can help them to decide if it is a career they would be interested in pursuing after high school. Although I am proficient enough in math and science to be comfortable attending SWVGS, my true interest lies in writing. The internship program through the Governor’s School has given me the opportunity to be an intern for nine weeks at the Wytheville Enterprise. It seemed natural to me to request an internship here because it is the premier example of journalism in the area.
