The Wythe County Board of Supervisors held a special work session Thursday night to discuss the possibility of undergoing a major project that would prepare an undeveloped portion of the industrial zone for a snazzy new (and for now hypothetical) tenant.

Council nixes stop signs

There will be no additional stop signs at Fairway Lane and Sherwood Forest Road. That was Wytheville Town Council’s decision Monday evening after another report from the town’s public works committee.

Wythe man dies in golf cart accident

A 45-year-old Wytheville man died Sunday afternoon after a golf cart rolled over his head, police said. Marvin Earl “Bud” Smith Jr. was apparently putting air into the left rear tire when the accident occurred around 3:26 p.m. at a residence on Crockett’s Cove Road.

Talks of consolidated dispatch services continue

Wytheville and Wythe County are continuing negotiations to consolidate dispatch services. Virginia State Police and Bland County have chosen not to participate.
An update on the proposal was presented to Wytheville Town Council at Monday evening’s regular session. For the past couple of years, the four local entities have explored the concept of consolidating their dispatching centers to handle all calls.

Center presents award named for ex-reporter

A former Enterprise reporter continues to leave his mark in the Virginia legal and anti-poverty communities even after his sudden death from cancer in 2007.
Last week at the annual Legal Aid Conference in Williamsburg, the Virginia Poverty Law Center presented its second John Kent Shumate Jr. Advocate of the Year Awards to one attorney and one non-attorney from a statewide pool of candidates.
