Saturday the 14th proves unluckyFriday the 13th may not have been unlucky for Richlands in their opening round of the state 11-12 year-old All Star softball tournament at Pound, but Saturday sure was a different story.
Richlands (District 11), which blasted out 11 hits against Olive Branch on Friday, was held to a miniscule three hits on Saturday by Atlee pitcher Auguste Rohle as the Lady Blues fell to the consolation bracket with a 5-1 loss in the double elimination tournament.
Sunday would prove to be a very busy (and productive) day for Richlands in the 11-12 year-old state All-Star softball tournament at Pound.
Richlands found itself in another must-win situation as the Lady Blues took the field for the second time Sunday in the 11-12 year-old state All-Star softball tournament at Pound. They responded beautifully with a convincing 8-2 victory over King William County (District 15) to advance to Monday where they faced McLean in a 10:00 a.m. contest with still another test at 2:00 p.m. if they won Monday morning.
Jordyn Cole pitched a masterful three-hitter against Olive Branch as the Richlands 11-12-year-old All-Star softball team successfully opened play in its quest for a championship in the state tournament at Pound last Friday.
The 9-10 year-old Bulldogs were just one strike away from becoming the second Tazewell baseball team to make it to the state Little League tournament this summer.
Lebanon’s Mic Leonard had a full count against him with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning at Bob Huff Field on Monday, July 9 and his team was trailing Tazewell 5-4 with two Pioneer outs already in the books. Leonard had struck out in his previous three appearances at the plate in the game. This time, instead of striking out, Leonard took ball four and walked to first base. Tazewell, just one pitch away from winning the game moments earlier, was now in trouble from a team that just wouldn’t go away!
The Bland County Bears Dixie Youth participated in the 2007 Dixie Youth Baseball League District Minors tournament held beginning July 7 in Independence.
The Bland County team was eliminated from competition after losses to Galax and Carroll County, but the coach praised his team’s effort.
One final appearance left on b-ball court
