The Pioneers and the Maroons of Galax made like the interstate traffic in the first quarter of their basketball game on Friday night. The action was hard to follow as the teams raced up and down the court.
In that unrestrained first period, Galax with a five- point lead and went on to win the Mountain Empire District encounter, 83-62.
The Scott Middle School wrestling team traveled to Carroll County Middle School recently for a quad meet. Also competing were teams from Pulaski Jr. High and Dublin Jr. High.
Scott defeated Pulaski 57-15 in its first match. In the second, Scott defeated Carroll County 40-7.
The Fort Chiswell Lady Pioneers basketball team stepped out of Mountain Empire District play Saturday afternoon as it traveled to Eastern Montgomery.
After having a quad game on Friday night and defeating Galax, the ladies from the Fort earned two wins in less than 24 hours as they defeated the Lady Mustangs 69-51.
The Fort Chiswell Lady Pioneers used a strong second quarter to grab a big lead and went on to defeat the Galax Maroon Tide 76-60 in a Mountain Empire District girls’ basketball game played Friday night at the Fort.
The Lady Pioneers held a modest 19-12 lead after the first quarter but went on a rampage in the second by scoring 29 points. FC held Galax to 15 points in the second quarter to take a comfortable 21-point (48-27) halftime lead.
Nine wrestlers from the Rural Retreat Wrestling Club competed in the Virginia Challenge Elementary and Middle School state tournament held Jan. 4-5 in the Hampton Coliseum.
Nearly 1,000 wrestlers from all across Virginia traveled to the tournament to compete with the best wrestlers in the state. This is a true state tournament in that Group AAA, Group AA and Group A and private schools all compete in one division.
