Maroons top Chilhowie
The George Wythe Maroons won their seventh consecutive Hogoheegee District boys’ basketball tournament by thumping Chilhowie 97-40 Friday night at Marion Senior High School.
The Maroons had already wrapped up a berth in the regionals by winning the regular season title with a 10-0 mark after dominating the other district teams. GW improved to 22-2 with the win and will host a first round game tonight at 7 p.m. against Patrick Henry.
A late basket by Chilhowie broke a tie score and gave the Lady Warriors a 55-53 win over the George Wythe Lady Maroons in the Hogoheegee District girls’ basketball championship game Friday night at Marion Senior High School.
The nightcap of the Mountain Empire District Tournament Championship saw top seeded Galax take on number two seeded Fort Chiswell in boys’ action at the Fort.
The Maroon tide lived up to their top billing as they used a strong first quarter en route to the MED tournament championship with an impressive 106-72 win.
With standing room only at Fort Chiswell, the Lady Pioneers proved that the third time is the charm Friday night as they faced the Grayson County Lady Blue Devils.
During the regular season, GC squeaked by the Fort twice but in both games FC was minus a starting player. Friday night, FC was without the services of senior Brittany Pinnix but this time the Lady Pioneers prevailed 68-65 in a double overtime thriller.
Here are scores from games played in the Wytheville Parks and Recreation Department’s Boys’ Basketball League on Feb. 21.
