Library, Barter partner for The Big ReadCounty events planned through November aim to not only get people reading, but talking, too.
“If you’re reading, your mind is thinking and putting pieces together and then talking about what you’re reading is much more broadening,” Washington County Library Director Charlotte Parsons said. “It encourages people to think about what they’ve read because you have to do some reflection before you can articulate your thoughts. TV, on the other hand, is very passive; it just happens to you.”
Although more than 33,000 Washington County residents are registered to vote, not many usually turn out on Election Day.
League of Women Voters member Sara Combs hopes to change that.

Police investigating robberySuspects target several gas stations
A fight over a 16-year-old girl apparently led to a stabbing in Saltville Monday night that injured a 20-year-old Saltville man and put a 19-year-old community resident in jail.
Expecting parents and those with children under a year old will find a wealth of information about protecting the health of their babies at Saturday’s Baby Fair.
The frustration is evident when Amy Horsh Smith’s talks about the increasing number of children threatened by preventable health crises in Smyth County. However, equally prevalent is her determination to fight the prevailing threats of obesity and tobacco exposure.
School board will continue to seek funds to renovate all county schools. Will supply county with information about possibly building three new schools.
Drug blight ordinance to be used by board
Charges have been dropped against both suspects in a March armed robbery at a Bastian gas station. One of the suspects died in August.
According to court records, the commonwealth dropped four felony charges against Crockett Dewitt Sexton, 44, of Narrows during a hearing on Sept. 24.
