Windy weekendThe “Windy Acres” sign outside Fred Mason’s farm on Crockett’s Cove Road acknowledges that things can get a little blustery across his fields.
But in his 38 years of living on the property 10 miles outside of Wytheville, the beef farmer said he couldn’t remember gusts as strong as those that ripped the roof off one of his barns Sunday afternoon.
“I was sitting in my office, just doing some work, and I heard this big roar – sounded like a jet,” Mason said.
It may not take a judge to end the battle between Walgreens and Wytheville after all.
Although the legal complaints filed by Mid-Atlantic Commercial Properties, the development company seeking to build a Walgreens in town, haven’t been settled, the developers’ lawyer said the group is considering other locations for the store besides a controversial North Fourth Street site.
A 41-year-old Rural Retreat man was charged last week with poisoning a well.
Larry Sylvester of A Frame Drive faces two felony charges.
A 60-year-old man was charged by Wytheville Police in connection with a bank deposit stolen last October from the Wytheville Go-Mart.
Selby Jackson, address unknown, will be extradited to Wytheville to face a charge of grand larceny.

Friday afternoon – that longed for time when the stress of the workweek slowly slips into the anticipation of the weekend.
The U.S. Postal Service is removing all its retail vending machines from post offices and other retail locations around the country by the end of February. It cites outdated equipment and lack of parts for the machines as reasons.
The arrest of a transport driver last month on abduction and rape charges has left the staff of Guardian Ambulance Service Inc. in shock. It also has prompted the local company to take additional safeguards to prevent any similar incidents.
