OK someone tell me what a spambot is ?

A computer program that automatically registers itself on forums or blogs and posts spam.  This one was particularly clever, because the message body was somewhat on-topic, and the spam link was in its signature

These programs are the reason websites show those annoying pictures of distorted letters and numbers that you have to enter in a box.  That’s a type of Turing Test (called CAPTCHA) which is supposed to tell humans apart from computer programs.  It’s easy for us to pick out the symbols in those pictures, but difficult for computer programs.  There is a constant battle between websites (like Google and Yahoo) and the people who write the spam software.  When the CAPTCHA is broken the website has to modify the algorithm they use to produce the images, to make them harder for computer programs to interpret (which also usually makes them harder for people to read as well).

Gas prices have been stuck at $1.55 here in Wytheville for a couple weeks now.  I was rather surprised yesterday, when I saw gas prices in downtown Salem at Go-Mart and Sheetz were $1.37.  Now half a mile from there at the stations at the interstate prices were 30 cents more and were close to $1.70.  However, in downtown Salem gas is 18 cents cheaper than Wytheville.

The price of crude is continuing to fall, and gas prices around the US have also fallen over the last week.  So I’m extremely suspicious that gas prices here in Wytheville haven’t changed in two weeks.  I think our local stations feel that $1.55 is as cheap as we should be allowed to buy gas, and they are letting their profit margins grow as the actual price of fuel drops.

So if you travel outside of Wytheville on a regular basis then you should check into gas prices elsewhere, because it could save you money.

Oh, and the interstate gas stations between Wytheville and Fort Chiswell were down to $1.53 at one point, but they’ve actually raised prices and are over $1.60 now.

Here’s a website that reports gas prices:

Here are the recent prices for Wytheville:

And for Salem:
