First of all, it is speculation that all the funds are for Palin. The expenditures did not start until after she became the vice-presidential running mate, so they are assuming the costs are just for her.
Second, here’s a news flash: it isn’t cheap for the wardrobe and professional assistants required to keep someone at their best image in front of millions of people day in and day out. I would go on about it costing more money and effort to keep woman beautiful verses men handsome, but I’m probably not making many friends around here as it is.
From the article you provided, let’s see about Hillary:
And in 2006, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) was ribbed for two hair styling sessions that cost about $3,000.
I wonder what Joe the non plumber thinks of Palin’s wardrobe cost and who is footing the bill. I now know why I received the “emergency campaign” request for donations to “McCain-Palin Victory 2008”.
The people footing the bill are the people that gave them money so they could become president and vice president. If that means having their teeth whitened then so be it.
“$150,000 Wardrobe for Palin May Alter Tailor-Made Image”
“Yet Republicans expressed consternation publicly and privately that the shopping sprees on her behalf, which were first reported by Politico, would compromise Ms. Palin’s standing as Senator McCain’s chief emissary to working-class voters whose salvos at the so-called cultural elite often delight audiences at Republican rallies.“ http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/23/us/politics/23palin.html?em

The RNC’s money is spent according to how they see fit. I have no problem with it, and I am a donor. Something makes me think that you did not donate. So what is your point?

Do you realize that Dan is defending your position?
Gov. Palin, the hockeymom who appeals to the Wal-mart moms, has 150,000 spent on her clothing and accessories is significant because it shows a disconnect between the spin and the reality. What exactly was wrong with her Governor’s clothing?
The RNC attempt to pin the “elitist” tag on Senator Obama and yet, in approximately 2 months spend $150,000. Regardless of the intent, this is just one more item on the list of hypocrisy for the RNC.

It’s FACT that a woman in public life is scrutinized for appearance much closer than men are. And I certainly don’t begrudge Palin for going along with spiffing-up her wardrobe for her campaign appearances. However, it could have been done for a LOT less than $150,000! She presents herself as a champion of the middle class, the “hockey moms” of the nation who are thrilled to get something new from the Gap, or Target, or even Walmart. $150,000. is more than most families are living on for a year. This was a bad, bad decision on the part of the RNC, and an unwise use of campaign funds. McCain has pulled out of Michigan for lack of money, and Colorado’s next. $150,000 would buy a lot of TV or radio time between now and November 4. This is the kind of ‘in your face’ thinking that disgusted Colin Powell.

The $150,000 line item was described as ‘clothes and accessories’ for Palin and family. One of the accessories was a Louis Vuitton bag for 7-year old Piper.
$70,000 at Neiman-Marcus alone. It challenges belief.
The clothes will be given to charity. I think that is a wise decision. Would you like to see a receipt of one of Michelle Obama’s meals at a hotel the Obama’s were staying at during a campaign rally? I can guarantee that not only will the amount surprise you, the amount of Iranian caviar that was consumed by this woman could feed 3 people.

I honestly couldn’t care less that the clothes are given to charity….and I like Palin. It was just a stupid move. The fact of the matter is that instead of spending all that loot at Macy’s, Neman Marcus, wherever…they could have bought outfits that looked just as nice at Goody’s or Cato for a couple hundred. But hey, I guess at least you can do something with clothes once you’re done with them as opposed to food.
Still, I doubt the charity will be very impressed with the names on the tags. Which reminds me of another point. What kind of message are they sending to kids out there? That designer clothes are what successful/important people wear? That you have to spend $150K on your wardrobe in order to be accepted? I get so sick of people thinking it’s a big deal that a purse is covered with “LV” or that Levi’s are somehow inferior to Tommy’s or Ralph Laurens. I’m a Wrangler/Faded Glory man myself :)
Both items that Gordy speaks about just go to demonstrate the pretentiousness of politicians. All politicians. They all talk about how they just want to help the middle class or the “less fortunate”. The truth is, they probably don’t even know where a middle class neighborhood is.
Palin was unable to wear 1/3 of the clothes that were purchased, because the size was not correct. So $50k worth was returned immediately. Another 1/3 was never worn, so that leaves $50k of clothing that was actually used at all. That clothing was used for 3 days during the Republican National Convention. So some official within the republican party thought it would be a good idea to provide a temporary wardrobe for Palin, had the clothes purchased, the media jumped all over it, only 1/3 of the clothes were used over the course of 3 days. It’s a non-story for Palin or McCain. She didn’t ask for the clothes, and did not even pick them out.
Unfortunately when you have biased media outlets like MSNBC reporting negative against the McCain campaign 5 times as much as Obama you have to waste some amount of time setting the record straight.
