Almost every weekend there are dog transports traveling through our area.
Most are headed up North to various rescues or to homes. Email me to find out more about transports.  I get them emailed to me ahead of time. As
you’ll see some transports are for a single dog, some are for a dozen or more that
require several drivers. The dogs can vary in size and breed and there can be lots of
puppies. They come from all over, some from nearby. If you have thought about helping out but where not sure what you could do or how much you wanted to do, these transports are an easy way to test the waters to see how you’ll like it. They are voluntary and you choose how many dogs or puppies you
want to carry and which leg you want to drive. A leg is the section or sections of the
transport you want to drive. Most are around an hour long, some are around 40 minutes.
Some dogs require a carrier for their safety but most do not. Contact the transport coordinator for more information.

In 2007 I helped transport over 90 dogs and puppies, as many as 12 pups at one time.  I like to watch the dogs and give them a break in back of my
truck which has a camper top and a bed rug bedliner. You will meet interesting people for
a few minutes on each end of the run. Plenty of time is scheduled and
everyone understands if you are running behind due to traffic, we have all been there.
Do not speed! It’s not worth it. Take a friend or family member with you. My wife and
daughter help me from time to time when they can. This can be a lot of fun. I have done
the Wytheville to Roanoke run which is the most common, Wytheville to Mt Airy, Kingsport to
Wytheville, Wytheville to Beckley and countless variations of these legs, some legs are
shorter some legs are longer, sometimes I do 2 legs.  Feel free to make suggestions to the transport coordinators.
These dogs are being rescued; some may be euthanized if they don’t find a ride. I’ve
never had a problem with any of the dogs I have transported, I don’t believe they would
ever try to send an aggressive dog but with any strange animal you should always be a
little cautious.  Give it a try you just might like it. It can be very rewarding!

I just found out that crates or carriers may be required per VA state code to transport any animal.
